The disaster occurring in Haiti makes a local business owner all the much more anxious to see her granddaughter return from there safely.

Ramona Bonner of Ramona’s hair style shop in Talladega reflects on the humanitarian work that is keeping a family member delayed in the country.

Her granddaughter is Megan Scott, 20, of Athens. Scott is in her third year at Samford University where she studies nutrition.

On Dec. 27 she left for Montrouis in Haiti to help with a nutritional program at Canaan Orphanage.

Although she was out of harm’s way when the earthquake struck, the disaster still affected both her and her work.

“Where she is they have no visible evidence of destruction,” Bonner said. “She can’t see it because they don’t have a TV.”

Bonner is just relieved that her granddaughter is safe and looks forward to the next time she sees her.

“Hopefully she’ll be home soon,” she said.

There may be a delay on that reunion, however. Scott’s flight was scheduled to leave on Jan. 22 but has been delayed until at least Jan. 27. Bonner said Scott’s father is doing what he can to get her out.

The earthquake has made its mark on Scott’s location. Bonner said there is not enough gas for traveling from the orphanage to the city of Port-au-Prince for additional food and supplies.

She said the orphans currently are on two meals a day.

Communications are also an obstacle, as phone communications are difficult.

“The only way she speaks to her parents is on Facebook,” Bonner said.

Still, Bonner is thankful that her granddaughter is unharmed.

Haiti is only the latest in Scott’s humanitarian efforts. Last summer she taught Bible classes to Lakota Indian tribes in North Dakota. She previously took part in a mission program in South Africa.

“She loves doing things to help,” Bonner said. “She may be going to medical school and be a pediatrician.”
