Well, if it’s not then it probably should be.
Childersburg High is hosting the Talladega County Basketball Tournament, which will begin Monday and run through Saturday. If you wait and just show up for the finals, then you’re probably going to miss out on some great games.
The same could be said for those people who just want to show up for the guys games. The girls side of the tournament should be as entertaining as the boys. Monday’s Winterboro-Fayetteville girls matchup will be the third time the two squads have played each other this season. Winterboro won the first and Fayetteville picked up the victory in the second meeting last week. The Lady Wolves are seeded second and could surprise some of the larger schools in the tournament.
Monday’s final game is another rematch, as area foes will meet for the third time this season. Munford and Childersburg boys will face off at 7:30 p.m. The Lions are getting hot at just the right time and could make things difficult for the Tigers on opening night. But the Tigers have possibly the best big man in the county and they’ve been hard to beat this season.
The girls version of that matchup will happen on Tuesday. The Munford Lady Lions have already locked up the regular season area championship and with that the right to host the area tournament. But the Lady Lions are hungry for a county tournament championship, especially after having to settle for second last year. To get back to the finals, they’ll have to beat Talladega in the semis. The two squads have met twice this season with the Lady Tigers taking the victory both times.
Wednesday features another rematch with Winterboro and Talladega County Central meeting up once again. The Fighting Tigers haven’t lost to an area opponent in a long time, but the Bulldogs have given the Tigers all they wanted at times this season. TC Central finished second in the tournament a year ago, but they’ll have a tough road to get back to the finals this season.
Thursday and Friday brings semifinal actions with the girls holding court on Thursday. Saturday will feature the finals for both sides.
All the teams are looking to knock off the top seed and reigning champion for both boys and girls, the Talladega Tigers. Talladega’s boys team is looking for its sixth straight tournament title while the Lady Tigers are going for three in a row.
The boys bracket features three teams ranked in their respective classifications (Talladega, Sylacauga and Childersburg). While those three may be the favorites, upsets can happen. And even if there aren’t any upsets this week, there are sure to be some great games. And you’re not going to want to miss those.
