SYLACAUGA — The new city schools Web sites were introduced at the City Board of Education’s regular meeting on Tuesday.

Instructional Technology Supervisors Sean Stevens and Nina Seaman showed the new sites for the school system and for each of the schools. The sites, which were designed by the company School Insites, work with each other to allow information from the individual schools to also be placed on the system’s webpage.

Stevens said the new sites would be helpful for everyone associated with the schools.

“We thought this is something that was long overdue for our school system,” he said. “This is a tool that we know we can use to bring a positive impact on our community. It’s something that we have been looking for a long time. Now we have that ability.”

Features on the city schools Web site included monthly school menus, school organization calendars and direct e-mailing to BOE members. The site also has provided technology help for teachers.

The individual school pages featured items such as school handbooks and publications, a principal’s corner and links to the different sports teams for Nichols-Lawson Middle and Sylacauga High School.

Also, each teacher will have their own page to provide information to students and parents. Seaman said the teachers were excited to have the new tools to work with.

“The teachers don’t view it as something extra they have to do,” Seaman said. “They see how it is going to help them in their day-to-day life. The student will have the information they need, the parent will have the information they need and they don’t have to recreate everything over and over again.”

Stevens said the finished product was a result of everyone chipping in to help.

“We couldn’t have done it without the help of all the teachers, all the central office staff, everyone who had a vested interest in this,” Stevens said. “They are the ones who helped make this happen. If it wasn’t for the individual teacher or individual support staff putting their part on it, it would not look the way that it does.”

Before the meeting, a reception was held for the board members by National Honors Society students from Sylacauga High School and the Sylacauga Teachers Association.

Representatives from one of the five schools presented a book to each member of the board at the meeting, in appreciation of the work they have done.

Also, two of Sylacauga High School’s football coaches were recognized at the meeting. Head Coach Matt Griffith was named the 4A/5A Talladega County Coach of the Year.

Defensive Coordinator Tim Posey was named the state’s 5A assistant coach of the year by his fellow coaches. Superintendent Renee Riggins praised Posey for the work he had done throughout the school system.

“I was blessed to have Coach Posey at Mountainview for several years,” she said. “Because he did such an outstanding job, they stole him and sent him to the high school. We appreciate all you do.”
