Staff at the Coosa Valley Medical Center honored their retiring head volunteer chaplain on Thursday.

Father Frank Young received a plaque in recognition of his service. Young served as a volunteer chaplain for 11 years with the hospital, filling the role as chaplain coordinator since 2005.

Young said he appreciated working with the other 16 chaplains who spent time at CVMC.

“One of the really good things about this community is the spirit among the clergy,” he said. “Clergy around here tend to be very supportive of each other, very open and very friendly. And that makes it so much better for everybody, the clergy and congregations.”

Vice president of Patient Care Services Amy Price said the hospital wanted to acknowledge not just the work of Young but of all the chaplains who volunteered.

“(Young) built camaraderie in the group, kept them engaged, worked to keep them committed to the patients and the needs of those in this building,” she said. “We wanted the opportunity to thank him for his service, for what he’s done for our facility and mostly for the patients and their families.”

Young has served at Episcopal churches in Alpine and Childersburg, as well as St. Andrew’s in Sylacauga. He said he would continue volunteering in other area endeavors.

Young also said he would take away several friendships from his experience at the hospital.

“It is so neat to walk into this building,” he said. “Whether it’s the guard that’s working in the ER or it’s the volunteers at the front desk, you can’t walk into this place without seeing people you know.”
