Allen Sanders of Marble City Grill proposed the “Super Sports Week and Block Party” for May 1-8. Sanders said the week would feature events including a 5K run and walk, a tennis tournament and a three-on-three basketball tournament.
“We decided to bring back the First National Bank Super Sports Weekend,” he said. “We met with [bank president] Harry Brown and asked if we could have the name, modify it and change the events somewhat and kind of bring that back to the city. He was in agreement with it.”
Sanders proposal included a block party to end the festivities, which would run from 4-11p.m. on May 8. He said the week would also be sponsored by TV24 and several other local businesses.
“Every year we try to throw a block party for a different charity in town,” Sanders said. “We usually try to do it in the fall, a September or October timeframe, but we decided to quit battling college football and move it to the spring.”
Sanders said the money raised from the event would go to the area Boy’s Club. Harold and Jody Brooks of the Boy’s Club were also on hand for the meeting.
Sanders said the Little League and high school were previous recipients of donations raised from the block party week.
The council was asked for permission to use several city venues, such as the tennis courts at Yates Park and the Sylaward Trail for a mountain biking race. Other events mentioned were flag football, racquetball and golf tournaments.
Sanders said the block party itself would have food sold from several different businesses including Pinchers, Downtown Barbecue and Raspberry Bakery, along with Marble City Grill. Money raised from food sales would also go towards the Boy’s Club.
Mayor Sam Wright commended Sanders on putting together the event.
“You have brought business downtown and you have gone about it in the right way, we appreciate it,” Wright said. “You have brought people into Sylacauga and this is another thing that I think is really needed.”
Sanders said tickets for the event would be $15 and they hoped to sell at least 1,000, with all the earnings going to the Boy’s Club. He said sponsors would cover the costs of the event itself.
The council agreed to add a motion to approve Sander’s proposal on an upcoming agenda. The city council’s next scheduled meeting will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the council chambers.

First, let me say I applaud the idea of the Sylacauga day or whatever the festivities are to be called. I might drive down myself but I'll be damned if I will allow anyone to talk me into running 5 kilometers; that's 3.2 miles you know!
At the same time, I think it's perfectly OK for the citizens to bring up REEF at every opportunity - that way it stays in the public eye. As I understand it, everyone is denying a problem even exists. My eyes and my nose both can attest to that being a falsehood.
It is interesting how, all of the sudden, more an more people are joining the forums. Unfortunately, many of them are apologists for the bad behavior of government officals, businesses such as REEF and school board members.
Had I any clue what it means, I would say "order up!"
Sincerely,
Bosley Alderman
Should I bring my stick if I'm going to ask questions on your behalf? Nevermind, I'll bring it anyway. I sometimes tend to unintentionally get things stirred up myself.
Ms. Clara Curtis, what we have accomplished we owe a debt of gratitude to her, Ms. Curtis has spent her money and devoted her time to help this town and ALL of the people in it. I salute you Ms. Curtis for all you have done.
Hope your RV isn't out at REEF they did pull one out there about a month ago.
Hope you will attend the meeting on February 16,2010 @ 5:30 p/m at J. Craig Community Center. We all want to clean up Sylacauga, but it will take all of us not just a few, not just the ones who are now sick from these fumes. REEF'S efforts to clean up their act has failed thus far. Do you think the trial and error process is working? Hope to see you on the 16th !
Now, to the yokels, morons, idiots who constantly skew the subject of a POSITIVE article with venemous comments against each other, it'd be great if you would go start a blog in a different, appropriate place. Whine and moan all you want, but not in the comments sections of good press. Dang people - don't you realize that your comments are public and are a disgrace to our city and an embarrassment to progressive, responsible citizens?
That's part of how I feel.
