SYLACAUGA — A local business owner spoke with the city council about a potential weeklong event in the downtown area at the regular work session on Monday.

Allen Sanders of Marble City Grill proposed the “Super Sports Week and Block Party” for May 1-8. Sanders said the week would feature events including a 5K run and walk, a tennis tournament and a three-on-three basketball tournament.

“We decided to bring back the First National Bank Super Sports Weekend,” he said. “We met with [bank president] Harry Brown and asked if we could have the name, modify it and change the events somewhat and kind of bring that back to the city. He was in agreement with it.”

Sanders proposal included a block party to end the festivities, which would run from 4-11p.m. on May 8. He said the week would also be sponsored by TV24 and several other local businesses.

“Every year we try to throw a block party for a different charity in town,” Sanders said. “We usually try to do it in the fall, a September or October timeframe, but we decided to quit battling college football and move it to the spring.”

Sanders said the money raised from the event would go to the area Boy’s Club. Harold and Jody Brooks of the Boy’s Club were also on hand for the meeting.

Sanders said the Little League and high school were previous recipients of donations raised from the block party week.

The council was asked for permission to use several city venues, such as the tennis courts at Yates Park and the Sylaward Trail for a mountain biking race. Other events mentioned were flag football, racquetball and golf tournaments.

Sanders said the block party itself would have food sold from several different businesses including Pinchers, Downtown Barbecue and Raspberry Bakery, along with Marble City Grill. Money raised from food sales would also go towards the Boy’s Club.

Mayor Sam Wright commended Sanders on putting together the event.

“You have brought business downtown and you have gone about it in the right way, we appreciate it,” Wright said. “You have brought people into Sylacauga and this is another thing that I think is really needed.”

Sanders said tickets for the event would be $15 and they hoped to sell at least 1,000, with all the earnings going to the Boy’s Club. He said sponsors would cover the costs of the event itself.

The council agreed to add a motion to approve Sander’s proposal on an upcoming agenda. The city council’s next scheduled meeting will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the council chambers.

Does the city of Talladega really support this great basketball team or the Daily Home for that matter. I feel so sorry that this team does not get the publicity that they desevre. Does the city not recognize that this team is in the top 100 (#94) in the nation according to Rivals.com the number one website in America when it comes to recruiting high school sports. That is a huge accomplishment in my book, and i would like to congratulate the team for their hard work and dedication to be the best basketball team in Talldega history. I would also like to thank coach Chucky Miller for all that he does with the kids to groom them into not just athletes but fine young men. In my opinion this is just an example of how close the school board really pays attention to the system. This is a huge accomplishment (may noy be academic) that these kids and coaches should be proud of and given support from not only the school but the city of Talladega itself. Im a national recruiting analyst and it hurts me so bad when my colleagues ask why there are no write ups are real coverage by the local paper (Daily Home) about this great team. Its like nobody cares. Well i care, and im sick and tired of this poor coverage on these athletes. There are players on this team that can play division 1 basketball and its a damn shame that you have to be a national recruiting analyst to know this. There should be a reporter at every home game and even a traveling repoter with the team at all times. I know Talladega is a small town with a small paper, but not to aknowledge these kids is awful. The sports editor at this paper should get it together and get on his/her job because there are no excuses for this lack of coverage. As of today there are four teams in the top 100 from the state of Alabama. Those teams being #75 Butler High School out Huntsville,Al, #78 Hillcrest high School out of Tuscaloosa, Al, #94 our very own Talladega High School and #95 Gadsden High School out of Gadsden. I just hope things are better during the playoffs when it comes to a media aspect cause right now these kids get no love from our very own city paper or the citizens itself. This team should be honored after the season by both. For these kids to make the grades to play, work so hard in practice, and give it all they have in games, and have such a high ranking in the nation not state rankings but nation can not and i will not let them go without the recognition they deserve. These articles do not cover half of the game. And the player profiles are awful. For a good read on our very own Talladega Tigers please go www.rivals.com and read how this team has been a dominate program under coach Chuky Miller for the past decade. Check out coach Millers extremely high win percentage. Our players are not getting the scholorships they deserve due to lack of coverage by the local media. If the local media is not making a fuss about the gems they have in there own city or town, why would national media and recruiting analyst as myself make the rush to get there. Im trying all i can get this team the praise they deserve. Everyone please go to www.rivals.com and support the tigers.

BG et al,

First, let me say I applaud the idea of the Sylacauga day or whatever the festivities are to be called. I might drive down myself but I'll be damned if I will allow anyone to talk me into running 5 kilometers; that's 3.2 miles you know!

At the same time, I think it's perfectly OK for the citizens to bring up REEF at every opportunity - that way it stays in the public eye. As I understand it, everyone is denying a problem even exists. My eyes and my nose both can attest to that being a falsehood.

It is interesting how, all of the sudden, more an more people are joining the forums. Unfortunately, many of them are apologists for the bad behavior of government officals, businesses such as REEF and school board members.

Had I any clue what it means, I would say "order up!"

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman

My personal oppion on this is that, Allan and Julie Sanders are doing a great job. We need something that our kids can do and go out and not get in some kind of trouble, and that we can all come together on. Marble City Grill has made an impact on Sylacauga, and props to Allan and Julie for that. Can't yall just let something good in our city happen wihtout bringing up REEF 24/7. YES, I KNOW it's a horrible smell, but lately I haven't smelt it, and I live not too far from it! I just think the city council should approve this, and lets them move foward, it will be a great thing if people will just give it a chance! REEF will be taken care of soon! GOOD JOB ALLEN AND JULIE SANDERS!

Well everyone raised eyebrows when REEF joined the chamber of commerce .So the small business owners can raise them some heck about loss of business in this city by dropping out of the chamber and showing support for the sick and yes possibly dying.HOW can i encourage my people to eat and shop where i know there will be part of the money i spend lining the pockets of attempted murderers? As i have said come see for yourself.Better yet post something in your doors or windows that you give a care and that you too have quit supporting this criminal act of insanity. then and only then business may pick up.There is some things a small business owner can do ,so please do all you can for the sick and elderly.WHY should our city die because of the wants of a few ?And you know who they are.SO TELL carol AT THE CHAMBER when reef is gone then youll be back .understand no one wants you to fail but we all need your help .THANK YOU. P.S.as B.G. AS STATED ORDER UP.

BG, I hope you are better and back to work, but if you are not quite 100percent but feel like getting out and about, I would enjoy meeting you on the 16th. If not, maybe we can meet later.

Should I bring my stick if I'm going to ask questions on your behalf? Nevermind, I'll bring it anyway. I sometimes tend to unintentionally get things stirred up myself.

Oh yeah, REEF hasn't been here long enough to have caused all of the problems in this city. Granted something needs to be done, but that is not the only problem here. I most definitely will be at the meeting on the 16th. I am looking forward to meeting all of you.

BG, I can see your logic, but I don't see how it will do anything to REEF. Are they or are they not inside the city limits? Shutting down an entire city to prove a point is less than careless to promote, in my opinion. Especially when the aim of the point is directed to something outside of the city. Vote them all out if you don't like them. Don't make the local business owners that have nothing to do with it suffer and shut down, putting even more people out of work and a bigger burden on the already cash strapped people that might not be able to afford driving somewhere else for everything. I completely agree that the thought of it to get something done would be cool, but the drawbacks and long term effects I think would be more than anticipated and unwaranted to our current business owners, their families, and their patrons.

BGSchneider, You hit the nail on the head so hard it knocked it through the floor. You are correct on all accounts 100%. However, I do want to give credit where it is due there are four people that have done what they told me they would do, Ron Johnson,Ken Horn, Larry Barton and Barry Vaughn. Nothing has shut REEf down yet but these men are attempting to help.

Hope your RV isn't out at REEF they did pull one out there about a month ago.

civilized- You have the hammer but you are going all the way around the nail, in my opinion- Reef has effected the entire town not just the Mill Village. We all love this town and want to see it prosper, that is why we are fighting so very hard to relieve what is causing the problem in this town-REEF. To leave a town where we are all neighbors, for our children and grand children, this generation must stand up and stand together. Otherwise all we will be leaving is land with no value, no one I know asked this company to come here, everyone I speak with simply want them gone, not masking the problem, GONE.

Hope you will attend the meeting on February 16,2010 @ 5:30 p/m at J. Craig Community Center. We all want to clean up Sylacauga, but it will take all of us not just a few, not just the ones who are now sick from these fumes. REEF'S efforts to clean up their act has failed thus far. Do you think the trial and error process is working? Hope to see you on the 16th !

I'm glad to see that someone is trying to do some positive things to help promote Sylacauga. Nice job Alan and Julie!

Now, to the yokels, morons, idiots who constantly skew the subject of a POSITIVE article with venemous comments against each other, it'd be great if you would go start a blog in a different, appropriate place. Whine and moan all you want, but not in the comments sections of good press. Dang people - don't you realize that your comments are public and are a disgrace to our city and an embarrassment to progressive, responsible citizens?

What? I didn't say anything about the people that have been hit by REEFs toxins. I do care about them and that situation, which is why I will be at the meeting on the 16th. I don't see how not supporting our local businesses, charities, and schools has anything to do with REEF. I will agree that human life is more important than any trivial problem our city has. That doesn't mean that our city doesn't have other problems, though. Is boycotting Sylacauga and all of its businesses going to help you guys that live around REEF in any way? Is getting REEF shut down going to do anything to help start repairing our broken and sad looking city? I am trying to relate to your anxiety over this situation, but I don't think my comment was related the way that you responded. Sure, kick Nero to the curb. He's a polictician(by title), easily replaced. Our city is not easily replaced, you care about it's well being also, don't you? I want it to be here long after we are gone, with all of its currently empty buildings filled with businesses and things for people to do other than just eat, get groceries, and make a run to Wal-Mart or Home Depot.

Not at all! I feel like I don't want to drive to another city for most of my shopping and patronage as I currently do. I feel like I would like some new businesses to move in. I feel like I want my child to have something to do in this area that doesn't involve the police running them out of parking lots as they did when I was in school. I feel like I want the 3rd railroad crossing repaired like the other 2 on broadway by city hall and the rest of the city's sidewalks and traffic lights to match and the horrible roads repaved. I feel like I want Sylacauga to grow and prosper rather than just die. I don't want to move. I like it here and I wish people like you could have a change of heart and care about our city and future or get out of it.

That's part of how I feel.
