CHILDERSBURG — The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory to the Childersburg area near the Coosa River due to the heavy rain that moved through the area on Thursday and Friday, but as of the late Friday afternoon, it appeared the city had dodged significant flooding.

Steve Dover, the public information officer at the Talladega County Emergency Management Agency, said, “None of our folks here have received any flooding reports, but the National Weather Service has issued a flood warning that will be good until Saturday evening or until they decide to cancel it.”

Childersburg Fire Department Chief Douglas Blair said the fire department had been advised by the EMA on Friday morning that flooding was possible but no reports of flooding had been received by the fire department.

The NWS reported that at 7:30 a.m. Friday the river level was at 399.9 feet. The Weather Service marks the flood stage beginning at 402 feet.

It estimated the river would reach a level of 402.1 feet by Friday night. At a 402-foot level, some low lying areas may be flooded, the Weather Service reported. At 404 feet, low-lying roads and yards may receive flooding.

Brandon Glover, a spokesperson at Alabama Power, said Logan Martin Lake was at 463 feet. The normal winter level is at 460 feet in the winter. In the summer the level is at 465 feet.

Glover said the dam’s spillway gates were open so water was flowing downstream but there was no report of any large-degree flooding.

“Right now we’re just dealing with our normal flood control operations,” Glover said. “We’ll keep monitoring the weather to make sure nothing affects the water level too much.”

Dover said the EMA was also continuing to monitor the situation and was prepared to move into action, if needed.

Does the city of Talladega really support this great basketball team or the Daily Home for that matter. I feel so sorry that this team does not get the publicity that they desevre. Does the city not recognize that this team is in the top 100 (#94) in the nation according to Rivals.com the number one website in America when it comes to recruiting high school sports. That is a huge accomplishment in my book, and i would like to congratulate the team for their hard work and dedication to be the best basketball team in Talldega history. I would also like to thank coach Chucky Miller for all that he does with the kids to groom them into not just athletes but fine young men. In my opinion this is just an example of how close the school board really pays attention to the system. This is a huge accomplishment (may noy be academic) that these kids and coaches should be proud of and given support from not only the school but the city of Talladega itself. Im a national recruiting analyst and it hurts me so bad when my colleagues ask why there are no write ups are real coverage by the local paper (Daily Home) about this great team. Its like nobody cares. Well i care, and im sick and tired of this poor coverage on these athletes. There are players on this team that can play division 1 basketball and its a damn shame that you have to be a national recruiting analyst to know this. There should be a reporter at every home game and even a traveling repoter with the team at all times. I know Talladega is a small town with a small paper, but not to aknowledge these kids is awful. The sports editor at this paper should get it together and get on his/her job because there are no excuses for this lack of coverage. As of today there are four teams in the top 100 from the state of Alabama. Those teams being #75 Butler High School out Huntsville,Al, #78 Hillcrest high School out of Tuscaloosa, Al, #94 our very own Talladega High School and #95 Gadsden High School out of Gadsden. I just hope things are better during the playoffs when it comes to a media aspect cause right now these kids get no love from our very own city paper or the citizens itself. This team should be honored after the season by both. For these kids to make the grades to play, work so hard in practice, and give it all they have in games, and have such a high ranking in the nation not state rankings but nation can not and i will not let them go without the recognition they deserve. These articles do not cover half of the game. And the player profiles are awful. For a good read on our very own Talladega Tigers please go www.rivals.com and read how this team has been a dominate program under coach Chuky Miller for the past decade. Check out coach Millers extremely high win percentage. Our players are not getting the scholorships they deserve due to lack of coverage by the local media. If the local media is not making a fuss about the gems they have in there own city or town, why would national media and recruiting analyst as myself make the rush to get there. Im trying all i can get this team the praise they deserve. Everyone please go to www.rivals.com and support the tigers.
