But the four-letter word for the future is jobs, and it gives rise to another four-letter word, hope.
Encouraging is that our elected leaders finally get it. In a rare act of bi-partisanship these days, they are coming together to get their job done -- passing legislation that will boost the job market and pump new life into the economy.
The Senate is expected to take up a jobs bill next week that is drawing support from Republicans and Democrats alike.
They are talking on both sides of the aisle about tax breaks for creating jobs and for employers hiring those who have been unemployed for at least 60 days. They are discussing extending unemployment benefits, like health insurance.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said the message from the public is clear: “They said focus immediately, and don’t take your focus off jobs, the economy, helping the middle class.”
It is a reawakening of what is important to the people in this country -- putting people back to work. And it is a recognition by both parties that the emphasis must be on jobs and little else until this down economy shows a significant upward climb.
That’s what the people want. And that’s what they ought to get.
