Bringing the ocean to the classroom

It’s one thing to study it in a book. It’s a better way to see it, touch it, feel it.

And that’s exactly what students at Sycamore Elementary got to do when the ocean and all its lessons came to them.

Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s traveling touch lab visited the school, exposing children to wonders they may not have ever experienced otherwise.

They learned about the ocean and environment from lectures, followed by an opportunity for students to actually see, touch and feel preserved and fossilized marine life. From whale vertebrae to a scull from a 300- to 500-pound sea turtle to a preserved octopus, children were able to see — and feel — firsthand about marine life instead of just reading it in the pages of a book.

It is that kind of learning that lasts a lifetime, and we commend Sycamore educators for bringing that lesson home to its students.
