TALLADEGA — A month after a deadly earthquake leveled Port Au Prince, the generosity and charity continues in Talladega to help those in need in Haiti.

Earlier this week, Coosa Street Church of God Pastor Henry Howard established a fund at First National Bank, the Aid To Haiti Account, which is now open and accepting donations.

“I have a friend, Sabary Boyer, who now lives in Michigan, but is originally from Haiti and still has family there,” Howard explained. “They’re running an orphanage that’s been converted to a refugee center. My friend Barbara Askew and I are planning to go whenever we can to help out with the cooking, cleaning, watching kids, whatever is needed.”

Howard turned to state Sen. Jim Preuitt to advise and co-sponsor the effort. “Brother Howard asked me to work with him on this, the effort to help raise money for relief. If he’s that committed, if he’s ready to go down there and roll up his sleeves and get to work, I would be more than happy to make a contribution and advise and assist in making this a reality however I can,” Preuitt said

The goal is to raise $15,000.

Howard said he planned on staying in Haiti for about a month. “We’ll stay as long as we’re needed.”

In the meantime, Dr. Ched Singleton, a general surgeon who practices in Talladega, was scheduled to arrive in Haiti Feb. 9.

Singleton himself could not be reached for comment earlier this week before he left the country, but according to his office he was scheduled to fly out of Atlanta Tuesday morning.

Singleton originally planned to fly out in January, but the State Department temporarily cancelled all flights into Haiti until security could be improved. His partner, Dr. Manuel Caceres, will likely fly out when Singleton returns.
