Talladega College’s women’s basketball team is hosting a Pink Zone game against Judson College on Monday and head coach Romeo Lagmay has invited everyone to wear pink and come watch the Lady Tornadoes play. The game is part of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s breast cancer awareness campaign, where college and high school teams around the country host events, usually revolving around a pink theme, to raise money for breast cancer research.
“This year we have 1,550 institutions participating making the event that much bigger,” Lagmay said. “Our date was supposed to be last week, but it’s going to be Monday, the 22nd at 5:30 versus Judson. For us, our team is going to be dressed in pink. A lot of things are going to be happening that day.”
Fans who wear predominately pink will be admitted to the game for free, according to Lagmay. Fans can purchase raffle tickets with a donation of $5. Prizes donated from businesses around Talladega will be raffled off at halftime of the game.
“Our athletic department and sports teams are going to be donating prizes as well,” Lagmay said. “It’s going to be a fun, festive event. We’re just trying to bring awareness to the breast cancer research foundation. The Greeks on campus have helped in raising money as well.”
Lagmay encouraged all of the community to come out and show their support, whether they can donate to the cause or not.
“We want to get the community involved,” Lagmay said. “Even if you don’t donate or whatever, just show your support. We’re looking for a lot of support at this game. We are part of the whole association. This is our second year doing so. We raised several hundred dollars last year and we’re trying to at least match that this year.”
All money raised at the event will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women’s basketball, on campuses and in communities. Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women’s basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006.
The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund is a 501 c(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.
Anyone who wishes to donate money to the cause, but will not be able to attend the game can do so by contacting Lagmay at 256-761-6229.
Tip-off for the Judson-TC game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
