Pell City’s animal shelter is off to a good start for 2010 with the numbers dropping for dogs and cats being brought into the facility.

January saw a 20 percent decrease as compared to January a year ago, and officials credit the expansion of the Spay Neuter Assistance Program with helping those numbers trend downward.

The program is open to all residents of St. Clair County and Lincoln in Talladega County, which contracts with the shelter for animal control services. And it makes available and affordable spaying and neutering services that have been sorely needed to turn the numbers around.

We commend the animal shelter for its work in this arena. It is indeed a success story worth lauding.
