The Talladega Courthouse lawn is in line for a new addition — a historic marker detailing the history of the area known locally as “the square.”

The historic courthouse square had its beginnings not long after Talladega was founded in 1835 and the courthouse was built the next year.

Today, it stands as the oldest courthouse in continuous use in the state, and that designation will be part of the maker.

The marker will also tell of the other historic buildings that formed the square, the first city hall, the federal post office, Ritz Theatre, Isbell Bank, Kenwin Building and Henderson Drug Store, some dating back to the mid-1800s.

It is another reminder of this historic city with deep roots, and erecting a historic marker to tell that story underscores the city’s dedication to preserving its past so that future generations may know.
