TALLADEGA — The top ranked Talladega College Tornadoes routed Voorhees 89-53 on senior night on Saturday.

The Tornadoes honored five seniors Micah Hagens, Kenny Irby, Chris Malone, Ramondo Banks, Aaron Jones before the game.

“It was a good win, especially for our seniors,” Talladega College head coach William Brown said. “I am glad to see them go out with a victory. I’m very happy for them, now it is time for us to execute for three more games. We have to do that practice by practice, and possession by possession. We have to make sure we get stops defensively, make sure that we are aggressive on the offensive end and everything will fall in place.”

For the Tornadoes their defense was their best form of offense against Voorhees. The Tornadoes stifling defense led to easy transition points for the defending champions.

TC picked up their defensive intensity as they went on a 10-0 run to give them a double-digit lead. Kerry Harvis scored six of the 10 points during the run that gave the Tornadoes a 24-11 advantage. The Tornadoes are hard to stop once they get in transition. TC went on another 10-0, which was capped off by an impressive dunk.

Center Jimmy Sutton got things started for TC as he roled off a pick and roll for a two handed dunk. Banks also showed off his hops as went up high to catch an alleyoop in transition for a two-hand dunk to give TC a 34-18 lead. The Tornadoes took a 44-22 lead into halftime.

“Once we stepped up our defensive intensity we get buckets,” Brown said. “Once we pressure the ball, get some stops, get some rebounds, we can get out in transition. Of course we can score, our problems all year have been on the defensive end. I think that we have been concentrating more on the defensive end and I expect more out of it especially this time of the year with our effort. Our effort was there, energy was there toward middle section of the first half when we stretched the lead.”

Harvis scored 10 of his 26 points in the second half as the Tornadoes continued to pour it on Voorhees.

“He has been Mr. Consistency all year,” Brown said. “He stepped up, he is becoming a leader on and off the floor and that is what we need. He is maturing especially on the floor, he has been consistent and that is what we need. We know what Kerry is going to bring every night, and he has to continue to do that for us.”

Phil Woods scored 11 points for the Tornadoes, while Banks scored 10 points.

The Tornadoes travel to Pennsylvania to defend their USCAA championship.
