Extending jobless benefits makes sense in recession

Unemployment compensation is not meant to be permanent. It is not meant to replace a paycheck. It is meant to help those who lose their jobs until they find a new one. In this increasingly drawn out recession, it makes sense, at least to some of us, to extend those benefits for longer than usual.

Not so to a couple of high-profile Republicans. Last week Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky) almost shut down the U.S. Senate because of a $10 billion bill that would have extended unemployment benefits._Former Republican House Majority Leader Tom Delay weighed in on Sunday in an interview with CNN.

“You know, there is an argument to be made that these extensions, the unemployment benefits, keep people from going and finding jobs. In fact, there are some studies that have been done that show people stay on unemployment compensation and they don’t look for a job …” Delay said._Sen. Bunning didn’t say unemployed folks don’t bother looking for a job if they have benefits. He just didn’t want to spend the money for that._Delay on the other hand resurrects the old criticism that helping people out in a time of need somehow is an evil thing that rewards lazy people. The “studies” he mentioned on CNN were not cited, and the person doing the interview didn’t press him on it. Probably just as well._Anecdotal evidence from Sunday’s Birmingham News paints a different picture._Alabama Adventure, a theme park in Bessemer, held a job fair on Saturday, looking for employees to work in the upcoming season. Park officials said it appears a record turnout showed up to stand in long lines for their shot at a job in the park. Some 800 showed up last year, but that included rehires. Saturday’s fair was just for new hires; a separate event was held for those who worked last year._Some of the applicants were young folks looking for a summer job. But there were lots of others who were just looking for a job. Some had been looking for a long time. In the Birmingham metro area, estimates are that 49,000 people are out of work. Many of them showed up on Saturday to apply for a seasonal job. Any job is better than no job._Don’t tell Tom Delay that. He apparently believes people would prefer to stay home and cash an unemployment check than work.

Alabama Adventure officials might disagree with that. They don’t have a “study” to refer to, but they know that last Saturday hundreds of people showed up to apply for jobs with them._We wish those applicants the best. For those who didn’t get a job, we hope their unemployment benefits last until they do.

Right, civilized. In the bigger scheme of things we own nothing. It's all temporary. We came in naked and we'll all leave the same way.

Some of us, by the fruit of our labor, may enjoy a cushy life-style while we're here. Others, by the fruit of our labor, will be enjoying the freebies the government provides with our money. Extending unemployment just gives them 6 more months to do it.

The government already owns your house, no matter if it is financed or not. Don't believe me, stop paying your property taxes and see what happens. Everything is basically "rented" from Uncle Sam!

Sooner ...or later...the buck will stop..Just how long is Washington going to extend payments before we become a "welfare state"..or will the government just buy your house and call it even..?

Daily Home I truly enjoyed the story of Mike Ellis and Terrance Cody. Great way to start my day with such a warm event. Keep up these type of stories, because even with our high unemployment in Talladega County there are people still serving and doing good deeds

I agree with WakeupAmerica. The author of this article skillfully manipulates facts and numbers to put the slant in his/her direction, obviously liberal. 800 people applying for jobs at Alabama Adventure amounts to 1.6% of the unemployed population. Of that, who can guess the number of those who are sincere? Consider some applicants are looking for summer work. Consider those who would leave their current fast food job to work in a fun environment (as happens every year at Great Adventure parks).

Of the other 98.4 unemployed workers, how many do you suppose have the attitude of deliberately staying out of work to collect the easy money? You're naive if you believe few of them think that way. It's convenient to stay home, avoid day care and gasoline expenses, and qualify for the other government handouts. We've made the system more lucrative and satisfying to NOT work for a multitude of people. Contrary to your thinking, "helping people out in a time of need somehow is an evil thing that rewards lazy people."

Delay is correct on at least two fronts. How do you pay for it? Here at my house we have always had to first figure out how to pay before we spend. Also, being retired, after working in the real world for 50 plus years, there is no doubt that more people than you think would prefer to stay home and cash an unemployment check than work. It wasn't that way before values and morals became obsolete.

Pay attention, study history and educate yourself about current events, especially Washington dealings and you will change your mind.

I was sure hoping the ultra liberal opinions would cease when Carol and Graham left, but, possibly we need to test the water.

When the government robs Peter and gives it to Paul, they will always have the support (vote) of Paul. Your grandparents can explain it to you.

WakeupAmerica, the tax and spend/free ride can not last, hence, study history.

What a skewed piece of liberal spin and Republican bashing this minutia is. Senator Bunning insisted that the extensions be paid for, not added to the deficit. That is a lot different than saying he would not give people unemployment benefits.

Alabama is a balanced budget state. Our Federal Government and California are two entities that freely write checks for money they do not have. If more people were diligent about how the Feds spend, which is the point Bunning was making, we would not have such a mess.
