The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is an event that unites community members against cancer, said Kelly Gilmore, Relay publicity char.
The 2010 Relay is scheduled for Friday, May 14, with a goal of raising. $56,000.
The sponsorship goal is $9,250 with a team goal of 25 total teams.
This year’s Relay will be held in a new location, the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind Track and Field located off Cherry Street.
The Survivor Dinner and Celebration will start at 5 p.m. the night of the Relay and all cancer survivors are invited to attend. The opening ceremony for the Relay will start at 7 p.m. and there will be entertainment throughout the night.
“This year the committee has been busy recruiting teams and so far there are 28 teams registered to participate,” Gilmore said.
It is not too late to form a team of from 5 to 15 people made up of family, friends, church members, clubs and fellow employees and others.
The deadline to register is Tuesday, April 6. Every participant who raises $100 will receive a signature Relay For Life T-shirt.
“Just name your team, come up with a goal and start fundraising,” Gilmore said. It is that easy.”

The 2010 Relay planning committee is made up of members of our community, some are cancer survivors, some are caregivers or just folks the want to help save a life and give someone another birthday.

survivorship chairs Teresa Simmons, Faye Lucas, Georgia Goodwine-Christian and Shirlean Tuck-Price; mission delivery chair Kathy Mosley; and entertainment and activity chair Alyson Carden
“We still need more businesses, clubs, organizations and churches and other organizations and groups to help sponsor our event,” Gilmore said.
“By becoming a sponsor of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, you are helping to find a cure for cancer and reduce the burden this disease has on our community. The American Cancer Society is one of the most recognized names in the country. In the days and weeks prior to our event, sponsors will be recognized in many different ways.”
This year a sponsor’s logo can be put on the back of the Relay T-shirts for a $250 donation, but there are many different levels and recognition available, Gilmore said.
Teams and volunteers are selling “Torches of Hope” for $50 each in memory of or honor of” someone who has battled cancer.
“After the event is over these are yours to keep,” Gilmore said.
The deadline to purchase a torch is April 30. The Luminaria Ceremony will begin at 9 p.m. The luminaria are $5 each, made in “honor of or memory of” someone who has battled cancer.
You may also purchase a caregiver bag to honor those that help lead our cancer patients through their battle. The Torches and Luminaria bags will be displayed at the event. All cancer survivors are invited to attend the “Celebration of Life” starting at 5 p.m. There will be entertainment, games and activities going on all night.
“We need the community’s support to help the 2010 North Talladega County Relay for Life to be a success,” Gilmore said.
