The original plans for the contest raised some eyebrows because they called it a lottery. Watson and company stepped back, took a good, hard look at their proposed contest and decided that the only thing wrong with it was the name. So they changed the name and charged ahead.
The contest gives Lincoln residents three chances to win $500 when they turn in their census forms. The mayor and council members are personally putting up the money, and local businesses are donating merchandise for additional prizes.
More than 250 people have signed up so far, and the first drawing was Thursday afternoon, National Census Day.
Watson said he and the council decided to go ahead with the contest because “the 2010 Census is just too important for city officials not to do everything they can to promote it.”
