LINCOLN — A lucky resident hit the jackpot with the first of three $500 prizes in the Lincoln Census Contest.

Lincoln bookkeeper Cheryl Martin drew the winning name at city hall Thursday.

W.E. Self was announced as the winner.

City clerk Laura Carmack called Self, who was not present at the drawing, to inform him of his good fortune.

“I feel great about winning,” Self said.

He said he has no plans for the money at this time.

“I will put it in my bank account and pay bills,” he said.

City officials said the Lincoln Census Contest has grown quickly in popularity, with 400 to 500 names currently submitted for a chance at three $500 prizes.

“As far as I know, residents can still enter for a chance at the last two $500 prizes,” Carmack said.

A letter given out to Lincoln residents states, “Lincoln Launches Incentive for Census Count. Win up to $1,500.”

The prize money does not come from city coffers, instead each council member is donating $150, and Watson is putting up $750.

The letter gives residents a breakdown of how to comply with the contest rules.

• On March 15 the census form was mailed out; it is 10 easy questions.

• Complete the census form and bring it to city hall. Drop it in a special locked box, which goes to the post office.

• On the City Contest Form fill in the form and drop it in the City Contest Box.

Carmack said at the end of the census count period, a second drawing is held for another $500.

There is a place for residents to estimate what the new census count is for the city on the Lincoln Census Contest form. The person guessing correctly or closest to the actual count will win $500. If there is a tie, the money is divided equally.

Individuals bringing in their census forms are also able to spin the city’s special Census Wheel of Fortune for one of many gifts, including a second chance at $500, a city of Lincoln pin, a Coke cap, a Coke golf shirt, a census mug, or a special prize from a number of prizes donated by local businesses.

Residents who receive mail at the post office will not receive a census form in the mail, since the census does not mail to post office boxes. The Lincoln Public Library is currently out of census forms for those residents to fill out, but expects to receive more forms next week.

Only one Lincoln Contest Form per address is permitted. Participants must turn in the census form at the library or city hall to participate. Individuals must live inside city limits to participate.
