Support firefighters with love, breakfast

To Kathrine Lambert, being the fiancée — and now wife — of a volunteer firefighter was a lot like being a member of an exclusive club. The women spent time together, talking or watching TV and trying not to worry, while the men in their lives were putting out fires.

One day recently, it occurred to Lambert that she and the other women could help the firefighters by doing more than just keeping the home fires burning. They formed the Riverside Fire Department Auxiliary as a support organization for the Riverside Volunteer Fire Department.

Now nine members strong, they spread the word about the fire department’s services, help out with community projects like the recent Easter egg hunt, and raise money for the fire department. With the money, they can supply food and water for the firefighters on duty and contribute to the purchase of small equipment.

Although all the members are women, the group is not exclusively for women. “Everyone is welcome to join, as long as they are willing to help and participate,” Lambert said.

So when you head to Riverside Landing for a Saturday of fishing and you find the group selling biscuits and coffee, stop and indulge. Besides getting a good breakfast, you’ll be helping the volunteer firefighters.
