Lakithia Williams, 19, was charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident with injury. District Judge Jeb Fannin set bond at $5,000.
According to Police Chief Alan Watson, Williams was driving a Honda Accord with two passengers up and down Knox Street Tuesday afternoon, shouting threats and obscenities. Sometime between 2 p.m. and 2:20 p.m. the car pulled onto a driveway on Knox Street, then veered into the yard where a group of people were standing. The car struck a 27-year-old woman. Watson said investigators believe the woman that was struck was probably not the intended target.
After the 27-year-old was hit, one of the passengers got out and struck a 19-year-old woman, also from Anniston, with her fist. Williams allegedly fled from the scene in the badly damaged Honda.
The first victim, who was struck with the vehicle, was transported to the emergency room of Citizens Baptist Medical Center in Talladega, where she was treated and released Tuesday night, Watson said.
Williams made it to the Chevron Station at Six Points, where Talladega Police officers took her into custody.
As it happened, the second victim, the 19-year-old, was inside the Chevron Station at the time, when the resident of the house where the initial assaults had taken place came in. The resident, the only player in Tuesday’s incident that lives in Talladega, came up behind the second victim and punched her in the back several times, according to Watson. The officers arresting Williams witnessed this assault and placed the Talladega resident under arrest for assault in the third degree, a misdemeanor.
The victim will also have to swear out a misdemeanor warrant for the original assault.
Several other people are also likely to face charges in the next few days, Watson added.
The chain of events leading up to the assaults on Knox Street remained unclear, however.
Leaving the scene of an accident with injury is a class C felony in Alabama, punishable upon conviction by one year and one day to 10 years in prison.
