TALLADEGA — Possibly because of the threat of catastrophic weather Saturday, the crowd at the 2010 spring race at the Talladega Superspeedway appeared to be relatively well behaved.

According to the Alabama Department of Public Safety, “from Thursday to midnight Sunday, Alabama State Troopers Task Force Zero made 127 driving under the influence arrests, issued 24 open container citations, 41 seatbelt violations, 130 seatbelt violations and 30 warnings. Task Force Zero is a unit of the Alabama State Troopers that specializes in DUI detection. During race weekend, TFZ conducts patrols around the Talladega Superspeedway property to enforce traffic laws, apprehend impaired drivers and save lives.”

State and county offices were closed Monday for Confederate Memorial Day, so little information on local arrests was readily available.

According to Talladega Police Chief Alan Watson, there were no deaths this year, and traffic flowed steadily Sunday.

A lot of people got up and left right after the Cup race, but a lot of them stayed, too. Things backed up for just a little bit after the first race, but then it went back and stayed quiet until about 7:30 (p.m.).”

He said the city might have even benefited more than usual because of the delay of Saturday’s events. “I’ve talked to at least one restaurant that said they got a lot more business race weekend than they usually get.”
