ST. CLAIR COUNTY — The Sheriff’s Department continues to work with the community to combat illegal activities in the county.

“We have seized four methamphetamine labs in the last three weeks, and wrapped up the investigations on two illegal gambling operations,” said Rick Oliver, a narcotics investigator for the Sheriff’s Department.

Oliver said the most recent meth lab was recovered Wednesday morning in a wooded area on Bonna Rosa Lane in the Ragland area.

“There were chemicals we had to have cleaned up by One Stop Environmental (who cleaned up the lab Wednesday morning),” he said.

Oliver said the meth lab was a shake and bake meth lab.

“A shake and bake cook can buy everything needed to make meth at a local convenience store,” he said. “They can take about $40 worth of materials and produce about $285 worth of meth.”

Oliver said the shake and bake method of manufacturing meth made the illegal narcotic much easier to make, and made meth labs more prevalent.

“Last week, we had information about a person we had a warrant on,” he said.

Oliver said when sheriff’s deputies went to the residence they discovered a meth lab, and obtained a search warrant to seize the lab.

“We made one felony arrest, and have charges pending for a second individual involved with the meth lab,” he said.

Oliver said Tammy Vinson, 46, of Springville was arrested in connection with the meth lab.

“We also recently concluded two investigations involving illegal gambling operations,” he said.

Oliver said two individuals were arrested in connection with an illegal gambling operation at 3450 Wolf Creek Road South in the Ruru’s Country Store building.

He said Stephen Ramsey, 62, of Pell City and Douglas Griffin, 58, of Cropwell were charged with promoting gambling and selling alcohol without a license.

“We also went to execute arrest warrants at 852 Pine Road, Pell City, and found another gambling operation in an outbuilding at that residence,” he said.

Oliver said Bruce Armstrong, 44, and Livina Armstrong, 39, who both live at that address, were arrested and charged with promoting gambling and selling alcohol without a license.

He said the gambling operations were investigated jointly by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department and the Alabama Alcohol Beverage Control Board.

“These ongoing arrests are the result of the community working with the Sheriff’s Department,” Oliver said. “We want to thank the community for providing the information necessary to the investigations into these incidents. We plan to work closely with the community in the future, and continue to see such great results.”

Anyone who has information about illegal activities such as illegal gambling, illegal use, sales or manufacturing of narcotics or illegal sales of alcohol should call the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department at 205-884-3333 or 205-884-6840 or 205-594-2140.

Why are we lumping a poker game in with a meth lab bust in an article? Seems a bit unfair to make poker seem as bad a cooking/selling drugs.

Why don't they mention in the article that these guys were playing poker? They make it sound like it is a large scale Bingo operation! If you are poker player, you need to vote against the current sheriff! He does not support your right to play this game of skill and still has the backwards (and proven wrong in courts) opinion that it is a game of chance.

Planted!!!??? I have never played poker with people I didn't know. I have to say that if this was the kind of place where people just show up and gamble without knowing each other, it was probably more than just a friendly game of poker. Still not a "big score" in my book. I don't understand the whole attitude toward gambling anyway. You'll probably see the ones screaming that it's wrong in Wetumpka or Mississippi every now and then, damned hypocrites. Not to mention scratching off a game piece from Burger King to win a sandwich or investing in their 401k. Is that not the same thing?

Oh, and it was not the neighbors. They had planted a guy in the games. Not sure how the players did not know he was a plant, because NO ONE plays THAT bad. LOL.

civlized,

Both were social games in a private place. No bingo machines, blackjack, etc. According to Alabama law:

"Section 13A-12-21

Simple gambling.

(b) It is a defense to a prosecution under this section that a person charged with being a player was engaged in a social game in a private place."

The "Gung Ho" bunch doing the raid seemed so proud of themselves, like they had just unravelled a major drug cartel or something... it's kind of funny, in a sad sort of way.

I don't get it. Were the illegal gambling operations just people playing poker at a private residence or were they running some kind of gambling house? Either way, it's kind of crazy. I don't see the bragging rights in it. The meth labs though, good job.

The scary part is that it sounds like the neighbors are the ones that turned in the gamblers. Look out you hard core poker players. Your neighbors are watching.

Kelly Howard has been missing for over a year and instead of looking for her, they harrass a bunch of guys minding thier own business and playing poker? Really? Your tax dollars hard at work. At least they busted a meth lab also, so they would not look like complete yahoos. Next week, they will probably tackle Jay walking... God bless them and the fine work they are doing!

Illegal gambling? Not really. Don't fall for the spin being put on this story by the local law enforcement people (during election time... Hmmm, interesting that these games have been going on for quite a while and no one cared until election time) These people were playing poker, a game of SKILL. Several other states courts have ruled recently, after testimony from mathematics professors and others, that poker is a game of skill, not chance. Thus it should not be subject to the gambling laws of Alabama. Maybe this will be the case that clears that up once and for all and takes us a step closer to Alabama not being such a backwards state. I hope the Poker Players Alliance and their legal team will get involved with this one, like they have in other states.
