“They’re doing a real good job,” B.B. Comer head coach Oren Barclay said. “We played the number one team in the state 4-1 in the first game. They hung tough with them and we just eliminated a team that defeated us last year 7-2. We are rolling right along; we will come back tomorrow and see what happens.”
Cymone Kelly was the story for Comer. The senior gutted her way through a foot injury that she suffered in the first game to strike out 15 batters in the second game against Aliceville. In the two games of tournament Kelly has struck out 23 batters.
“She is hurt,” Barclay said. “She got a line drive to the arc of her foot the first game and she gutted that game out. We are going to work on it tonight to get it loosened up. The pain that she was in and to pitch the way she did, it took a lot of heart. She is special.”
The Lady Tigers’ offense provided Kelly with some run support. In the second inning Comer put three runs on the board. Ashley Ogle scored the first run for the Lady Tigers on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Keyana Kirksey drove in Jada Hutchins to make it 2-0. Kirksey scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0.
In the fourth inning Kirksey scored again on a passed ball to give the Lady Tigers a 4-2 lead.
The Lady Tigers added two more runs in the sixth inning to make it 6-2. Shenellia Cook single drove in Alexandra McGhee to make it 5-2. Ogle hit a double to score Cook to make it 6-2.
The Lady Tigers added an insurance run in the seventh inning to make it 7-2.
“We are hitting the ball finally and our pitching is holding up,” Barclay said. “We are just going to see what happens (today).”
The Lady Tigers take on the loser of Trinity/Dadeville today at 9:30 a.m.
In the first game errors proved to be the difference in B.B. Comer’s 4-1 loss to Sumiton Christian in the first round of the class 3A South-Central Regional Softball Tournament on Friday at Troy.
Both of Sumiton Christian’s runs were unearned in the first inning. Sam Englebert knocked in Cadi Oliver, who reached base on an error on the third baseman to give Sumiton a 1-0 lead. Englebert scored from third base when Kaylin Sides was caught in a run down between first and second base to give the Lady Eagles a 2-0 lead.
B.B Comer pitcher Cymone Kelly got settled in the second inning. The Tuskegee recruit shut down Sumiton Christian the rest of the way. The senior only allowed two hits and struck out six of her eight batters after the first inning.
The two hits that Sumiton Christian picked up were costly. Cadi Oliver reached base by getting beaned by a Kelly. Tanner reached on an infield single to the shortstop. Englebert hit a base-clearing single to bring home Oliver and Tebonie Tanner to make it 4-0.
The Lady Tigers made it a three-run game in the seventh inning. Jada Hutchinson knocked in Atedra McGhee to cut the lead down to 4-1.
