The Talladega Junior Welfare League hosted its fifth annual golf tournament at Alpine Bay and tournament director Stephanie Stephens said the group was pleased with the turnout.
“We are very excited about the turnout,” Stephens said as members of the league continued to register golfers an hour before the tournament began. “We anticipate 17 teams for the four-man scramble.”
In addition to hold bragging rights for winning the tournament, golfers were able to help many organizations in Talladega by participating in the event. Proceeds from the tournament are given to several organizations in Talladega.
“The good thing about the league is the money goes right back into our community,” Stephens said. “It stays in Talladega County. We try to divide the money, so we’re able to give a portion to the Ritz Theatre.
“We use some for Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for needy families. We do several scholarships for the various county schools. We give money to Palmer Place, First Family Services and we also give funds to help with the Junior Miss program.”
The golf tournament, which league members said began in 2005, is one of two major fundraisers the Talladega Junior Welfare League hosts each year. League members also donate their time for events in the city such as Sunshine Saturday and April in Talladega.
Stephens said the tournament would not have been possible without the support of area businesses that provided donations to make the event a success.
“We would like to express our sincere thanks to every person who purchased an ad, who purchased a raffle ticket, who played golf, and the community for its continued support over the years,” Stephens said. “We also want to thank the many businesses who have offered their support.”
