The two Talladega County Relay for Life events held Friday night brought in more than $140,000 for The American Cancer Society.

Teams raising funds for the North Talladega County Relay, along with event sponsors, have raised $71,000 so far, said event co-chair Kelly Gilmore Monday morning.

The group exceeded their 2010 goal of $56,000 by at least $15,000.

“We had a great event and everything turned out so well,’ Gilmore said.

“We are so proud of our teams and all of our volunteers and sponsors.”

This year’s Relay for Life was held on the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind campus, a change that worked out well for the event, Gilmore said.

“We appreciate their help so much,” she said.

A big “thank you” goes out as well to those who provided entertainment, those who made donations and to the cancer survivors and caregivers who participated, Gilmore said.

More than 75 cancer survivors and their caregivers attended the Survivors’ Dinner this year.

Teams for 2010 North Talladega Relay included Clowning For A Cure, Citizens BMC, Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Sisters United AKA, Courthouse Cronies, PA Gang. TOUCH, Talladega OB/GYN, Eva Lou Swain Curry Team, First National Bank, Munford Elementary School, Shiloh United Methodist Church, Woman To Woman Support Group, Graham Elementary, Stampede, Mooving for a Cure, Pity Pat’s, Southeastern Signs, Metro Bank-Lincoln, Talladega Public Health, Jane’s Jewels, HOSA, New Image Hair Salon, Clara’s Clowns, Pirates for a Cure/Masterbrand, Green Team, ABC Fighters, Salter Elementary and Henderson Elementary.

A Relay “Wrap Up” event will be held in June to announce the top fundraising teams, Gilmore said. The date and time will be announced.

The 2010 South Talladega Relay for Life raised approximately $70,000, said Taylor Logan, chair person for the event.

“We had the most people ever and the best participation,” she said.

“I feel great about the whole event.”

She, too, sends out a huge “thank you” to all who made the event the great evening it was.

More than 100 cancer survivors took part in the South Talladega County Survivors’ Reception this year, Logan said.

Team awards announced include Top Fundraising Team, Comer Elementary School; Top Fundraising School, Comer Elementary; Top Fundraising Church, Mignon Baptist Church; Top Fundraising New Team, The Sanctuary; Best Campsite, First Methodist Church; Top Online Team, Comer Elementary; and Best T-shirt Design, Marble City Baptist Church.
