John Luker nabbed a victory over Nelson Bates on the Republican ticket, which will allow him to run against Commissioner Tony Haynes in November.
He appreciated everyone who helped with his campaign, the people who voted for him and his worthy opponent.
“I am extremely appreciative of the help and support of everyone who worked with me on my campaign,” Luker said. “I attribute my success to hard work, my family and God – and not necessarily in that order. I want to congratulate Nelson on a good race; it was very close.”
Bates had not been keeping track of the election, but was quick to congratulate his opponent on a well-fought race.
“That is the choice of the people and I support their decision,” Bates said. “I hope now everyone can come together in support of his bid in November. I thank the people who voted and supported me.”
The race for coroner was open to whichever Democratic candidate won, since Jerry Castleberry announced he would not seek another term as coroner.
Current deputy coroner Shaddix Murphy took the lead with 1,818 votes to Thad Snyder’s 1,265.
Murphy said those working on his behalf made the difference in his campaign.
“I appreciate everyone who spoke on my behalf and passed out cards,” Murphy said. “This has been a stressful couple of months, but now there is a sense of relief.”
Murphy said he looks forward to serving as Talladega County’s coroner for at least the next four years, and thanked everyone who voted on his behalf.
His opponent, Snyder, took the news well and plans to start cleaning up his signs and campaign gear today.
“I congratulate Shaddix on a good, clean campaign,” Snyder said. “I want to say thanks to all the people who voted for me for all their support and hard work. I wish I could have prevailed.”
Talladega County Board of Education District 5 was open to the Republican candidate winning the highest number of votes.
Kathy Landers defeated Eddie Slaten with 700 votes to his 184.
Landers thinks a lot of hard work paid off in her successful campaign.
“I tried to see as many people as I could going door-to-door,” Landers said. “Not only did I have the support of friends and family, I hope my experience teaching helped me in showing that I am trying to serve their needs. I felt the love of the people and I sincerely appreciate their support. I hope I can live up to all the faith they have in me.”
Slaten was disappointed in the turnout for the race, but respected that the people voted their choice.
“Kathy did a good campaign and I think she will do a good job,” Slaten said. “I appreciate everyone who voted for me and I’m sorry I didn’t get more votes. I appreciate their effort to get out there and vote their convictions.”
