SYLACAUGA — Officers from the Sylacauga Police Department and Talladega County Drug Task Force arrested five people on meth-related charges Sunday.

James Edward Keel, 54, and Maleia Dawn Keel, 25, were taken into custody at their residence on Quarry Road. Also arrested were Jamie Craig Deason, 29, of Sylacauga and Carrie Denise Ingram, 22, and Joseph Andrew Williams, 26 of Childersburg.

All five were charged with first-degree manufacturing of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.

Sylacauga officers went to the residence on suspicion of manufacturing meth at around 5:30 a.m. Task force commander Jason Murray said Thursday his office was contacted when officers determined there was a meth lab at the home.

“They made contact with James (Keel), the owner of the residence, and got consent to search the residence and located an active lab,” Murray said.

Agent Jason Blankenship responded from the DTF. Murray said parts of another meth lab were also discovered.

“They were trying to burn some remnants of a lab in a next-door neighbor’s yard,” he said.

Murray said there was also approximately two grams of finished product found. Officers took the suspects into custody without incident.

Law enforcement transferred the five to Talladega County Jail. Murray said everyone but James Keel had a previous drug-related charge.

Deason, Ingram, Williams and Maleia Keel were each held on $50,000 bond. James Keel’s bond was set at $25,000.

Unlawful manufacture of a controlled substance in the first degree is a Class A felony according to Alabama Code, punishable by 10-99 years imprisonment. Possession of a controlled substance is a Class C felony, punishable by 1-10 years.
