The school is the only one in the state to participate in National Get Outdoors Day, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. This is a nationwide campaign to promote health, activity and outdoor fun. “The idea behind this is to encourage kids and their families to restore a connection with healthy outdoor activities,” said wildlife biologist Art Henderson, who works with the Talladega Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service, which along with the town of Munford is sponsoring the event.
Overlapping with those festivities will be a ceremony at 10:15 a.m. to certify Munford Elementary as an Outdoor Classroom School. As such, it will serve as a model for schools across the county and state in developing an outdoor class site on the school grounds. Teachers will use the outdoor classroom site to integrate lessons in math, science, history, geography and language arts. Even better, they’ll have a good reason and a safe place to take their students outdoors.
