Old-timers, tweeters get out of the house

Old meets new in the pages of the Daily Home. Two stories on the same page Thursday invite residents to leave their homes, TVs and computer screens to participate in real-live activities. The diversity of the activities, however, might serve to make some “old-timers” feel a little out of touch.

“Old-Timers Ball Game Friday” announces a softball game for — you know who you are — at Talladega High School’s baseball field. In case of rain, the game will move indoors to the Spring Street Recreation Center and magically transform from softball to wiffleball. The game will raise money for the American Red Cross.

Another story describes an upcoming “TweetUP” Tuesday in Sylacauga. Anyone likely to go will know from the name what it’s about. For those who don’t recognize the term “tweet,” it is what users of the social networking site Twitter do when they post their abbreviated notes about moment-to-moment activities. “Meetup” has become the favored word to describe in-person encounters among people who have first met online; thus, “TweetUP” is a meetup among Twitter users.

Both events sound like fun, whether you are an old-timer or a tweeter — or both. The fact that they are happening is evidence that even with all the electronic forms of entertainment and communication, sometimes you just need to get out of the house and do something.
