TALLADEGA – Tami Johnson moved one step closer to her dream of playing college softball when she signed with Talladega College on Monday.

“It’s always been my dream to play ball,” Johnson said. “When I got the opportunity to I took it.”

The Lincoln High grad has had the opportunity to experience two sides of the game and both could be helpful as she moves to the collegiate level. In addition to playing high school softball for Jay Hooks at LHS, Johnson is now coaching a 14 and under team in Lincoln. The experience could be useful after college, as Johnson wants to major in physical education and pursue a career in coaching.

“We’ve only had one game so far, but we won,” Johnson said Monday. “It’s more difficult to coach. I know how my coach feels. It’s more stressful (than playing). It (what the players do) reflects on you.”

While she hasn’t played softball since graduating from LHS in 2008, Johnson proved her worth as a softball player in a tryout at the college.

“Tami has not been playing the last two years after she graduated high school,” Talladega College head softball coach Mallory York said. “But I do remember her as a catcher when she was at Lincoln High School. We actually had a tryout for her and she did great…catching and…at second base. I think wherever I put her in the field she’ll do a great job. She works hard.”

Johnson made big plays behind the plate for the Lady Golden Bears. She said strong coaching and teamwork helped make her years at Lincoln successful.

“I was the catcher,” Johnson said. “I had a good coach. He was hard on me. We worked together as a team. We always practiced.

While she enjoys playing catcher, Johnson said she’d be happy to play almost any position on the field.

“I can play anywhere, just don’t put me on the pitching mound,” Johnson said with a smile. “I love to catch, but I can play anywhere.”
