SYLACAUGA — The Sylacauga City Schools Board of Education discussed possible renovations to the high school at a work session Tuesday.

The board met with architect Ray Williams of Barganier, Dais and Sims. Williams showed them plans for renovations to the north end of the school and a 29,000 square-foot addition on the south lawn.

He said the proposed addition would hold 24 regular classrooms and two computer classrooms. Board member Steve Marlowe asked if the new classrooms would be large enough to support different uses as technology or teaching styles changed.

“We try to keep classrooms as flexible as possible,” Williams said. “The way we accomplish that is we try to put as much technology into the room as possible.”

The north renovation would add approximately 6,000 square feet and expand the school’s media center and science laboratory. Williams suggested different options to the changes made to that part of the school, which was originally built in 1923.

He said one of the options was to keep four of the classrooms available for use.

“But we might consider demolishing all of that unless you need the classrooms,” he said.

The projects would be paid for from money raised by a bond issue by the city, according to the board members and city officials. The bonds would be repaid with money raised from the city ad valorem tax.

The city council members invited the board to discuss funding matters with them at their work session July 6.

Board president Skip Smithwick began the meeting by asking about the ongoing lunchroom renovation at the high school. Maintenance supervisor Johnny Gray said the remodeling was near completion.

Gray said the final inspection was scheduled for July 16. The board agreed to meet at the lunchroom for their regular August meeting.

The board also held their regular meeting after the work session. The board and superintendent recognized board member Tracey Allen for serving as president for the 2009-2010 school year.

Smithwick, who was named president at the May 26 meeting, presented Allen with a plaque acknowledging her work.

Also at the meeting, the board approved a resolution allowing state teacher units to be moved from one city school to another. Superintendent Renee Riggins said transferring the units of pay would allow the board to free local funding for other uses.

Riggins explained that fractions of units can be left when all teachers’ pay was accounted for at a school.

“We can offset what we are losing from the city (in funding),” she said. “Anything helps and we may have two or three fractions of units that we can use.”

All board members were present at the meeting. Their next regular meeting is scheduled for July 27.

My goodness! Isn't the new board President the same fellow who was arrested for his shennanigans with funding in his bid to move to the state board level?

The hijinks in Sylacauga never cease to amaze and amuse me!

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman
