Attorney General Troy King charged Teel, who is also a resident and attorney in Sylacauga, with soliciting money to influence official action, using his office for personal gain and misuse of confidential information as well. The indictment came from Etowah County Circuit Court.
King charged two other men, Etowah attorney Frank Bailey and Teel’s son, Ryan Teel, with aiding and abetting on the five counts.
The indictment was filed June 11. An Etowah circuit judge signed the document June 17 and set bail at $16,000 each for the three.
Attorney Rod Giddens represents Teel on the matter. He contended Teel and Bailey were working on a civil settlement for a client.
Giddens called the indictment of Ryan Teel “curious at best,” and said he believed it to be “leverage against his father.”
“(Ryan Teel) was just accompanying his dad to Gadsden to consummate what they thought was a settlement agreement,” he said. “This is just really a low blow.”
A representative from King’s office stated by e-mail they were not able to provide any details other than the indictment.
According to a release from the Attorney General’s office in May, agents from that office and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation arrested Teel and Bailey May 19 after they accepted a check for $1 million.
The charges claimed the attorneys attempted to obtain money from Rainbow City Municipal Judge and attorney Jay Stover and his client Carl Weaver, president of Techtrix Incorporated in Gadsden.
The release went on to state Teel and Bailey were handling a civil lawsuit against a man who could face capital murder charges.
Giddens previously said Teel and Bailey represented Roger Firestone of Etowah County in a civil claim against Weaver. He said the claim centered on an incident at a Weogufka hunting camp in May 1995, where Firestone and two other men were bound and severely burned.
Firestone was the lone survivor of the three. A grand jury in November indicted three men for the crime, and Weaver was not one of them.
Teel released a statement May 25. In it he stated he was “shocked” that the charges were made against him, calling them “false.”
