It is one of two grants the city hopes to secure for projects.
Louise Campbell, the city’s contract grant writer, said at Monday night’s council meeting the other grant application is to help pay for sewer work. She said the $500,000 Community Development Block grant is for sewer line replacements in the Mill Village area.
Campbell said the money is needed for the community center roof.
Officials say the roof is in bad need of repair.
“It’s horrible,” said Harold Bubba Edge, the interim parks and recreation director.
The roof has many leaks.
“We have part-time people, if it rains, that’s what they do, mop up the water,” Edge said last month after the roof was inspected by roof contractors.
Council members said they want the roof fixed properly, and the $250,000 would provide enough money to replace the aging metal roof.
Also Monday night, the council approved an agreement with local developer and businessman Jeff Jones, which could pave the way for new development at the former Miller-Sutherlin Auto Mall property.
According to the agreement, the city will repave and widen a portion of Ninth Avenue, next to the property, and define the new right of way.
In other business Monday night, the council:
• Approved bid specifications for the phone system to encourage more bidders and extend the date bids are submitted. The bid submission deadline is July 24.
• Approved the alcohol license application for Eden Chevron.
• Appointed Margie Sanford to the JBS Mental Heath Authority, which serves Jefferson, Blount and St. Clair counties.
• Appointed Curtis Capps to the DARE Board.
• Approved a list of items to auction on GovDeals.com.
• Approved the transfer of the retail beer and wine off premise license for Shields Store to Pell City Ford Mart, Inc. (Shields Corner Store), 4209 Stemley Bridge Road, Suite 2.
