Carol Emlich-Bates said she spoke with several residents and merchants in the area Wednesday about their potential new neighbors. Many of the phone calls to the Chamber were people asking what they could do to help bring the development here, she said.
“What I have been telling everybody is not only do you need to talk to your own councilman, you need to talk to all of them and the mayor,” Emlich-Bates said. “Just say, ‘We are behind this and we want to see it come to town.’”
She said there were some concerns among local business owners, that new stores could hurt their sales. But Emlich-Bates said she believed the increased traffic would only enhance downtown and other shopping areas.
“People who stay long enough to go to the movies or see what is down there are going to look at the rest of the city too,” she said. “When you go visit a town, you don’t just stay in one area. You drive around.”
Emlich-Bates, Mayor Sam Wright, city council members Jim Heigl and Walter Jacobson, city clerk Patricia Carden and others have discussed the proposed center with members of Cullman-based Drinkard Development for several months.
Jacobson said the search for someone to develop the property revolved around finding “the right fit” for the area. He said finding a commercial developer who was preferred by national chains, like Carmike Cinemas, was important to get more people to stop and shop.
“One of the things that pulls people off the road is if they see a T.J. Maxx, Ross, Encore Shoes or Tractor Supply, things like that, they are going to stop,” he said. “If it’s a local name, they are much more reluctant.”
Jacobson said he met with owner Roy Drinkard on several occasions. He also met with officials and people in communities where Drinkard owned shopping centers.
He said he came away confident that the development and the owners would be an addition to the community. He too received positive feedback Wednesday, he added.
“I have gotten calls today from people who talked to contacts in Cullman,” Jacobson said. “They said they were getting positive reports that if the Drinkards say they are going to do something, they are going to do it and it will be first-class.”
Drinkard representatives showed their plans for the area on Tuesday, which included a 178,000 square foot shopping center, restaurants and a Carmike movie theater. Jason Grimmett of Drinkard said the center could be “anchored” by a T.J. Maxx or Ross clothing store.
The proposed site was a 33-acre plot of land on the south side of the Wal-Mart parking lot.
Grimmett said Drinkard Development focused strictly on small-market areas. He said the group planned on joining the local Chamber and staying involved in the area.
Drinkard representatives said the company began in 1967 and had commercial, residential and government developments across seven states. They also said more than 98 percent of all spaces were leased in their finished commercial centers.
Emlich-Bates said she believed the shopping center could “set Sylacauga apart” and help the city during the ongoing recession. She said it could not only generate new revenue, but it could be a selling point for the local Industrial Development Board and Economic Development Authority.
She added industries looked at more than the basics required for operation in a potential city.
“They are also looking at the quality of life for their employees,” she said. “With the (employee) pool that we have here, and all the other amenities that we would bring with this new development, it would only make this more of a destination.”
Jacobson said discussions with the entire city council on the fine points of the proposal would begin soon. He said he expected them to move on the matter “as quickly as possible.”
“Hopefully will be able to have that (discussion) with the public within the next couple of weeks or so and we can start looking at the pros and cons of it,” he said.

From an outsider's perspective, it appears that the members of the group are fighting amongst themselves. If that is the case, the public is left with a poor perception of the group. This means the public will probably never know or hear what the group stands for as they are constantly caught up in reading the arguments among the members.
As you say, an organizationally owned web-site could solve two problems. First, it would be a reliable tool to use to communicate with its members. Second, the arguments could be easily filtered out.
Best wishes and good luck.
Sincerely,
Bosley Alderman
Websites are not my specialty, but I think POET needs its own site. There are enough of us that we can monitor and administer it once its setup. Then, if necessary, we can post a link to real information and leave the Dear Abbey stuff to the Daily Home since that's all they're interested in. Even the liberals have stopped posting, that ought to tell you something.
I just forwarded several of my SPAM e-mails to the members of management at the Daily Home. Unfortunately, their SPAM software is better than mine and they came back to me.
Interestingly, it is apparent that they are in some manner using the same computer equipment as the Anniston Star as the e-mail automatically sent back to me was from that machine.
Perhaps if they have centralized operations on the technical side of things, that might explain the lack of attention paid to the DH's online site.
WWGD (what would Graham do?)
Sincerely,
Bosley Alderman
Instead of reporting real problems in this town, they are rather focused on some uproar on this forum. "The quieter the local paper, the louder it becomes!" SWF.
This is the only news/political website that you can comment on without the ability to flag.
My online name is speakwithoutfear; it is a name I got from Martin luther King while watching Glenn Beck. I think it applies to this situation because the local media is trying to intimidate and suppress. Although I and everybody else had to register, you didn't have to post your real name. Furthermore, it was wrong for them to post our personal email addresses without adequate notification.
Daily Home, I will post your staffers email addresses to the public and the world. Happy spamming deleting days ahead for you. Poetic Justice will be served.
I did a search on Thweatt/EDS - very interesting reading! I have never made the personal acquaintance of anyone who had a case argued at that level - quite impressive!
I think you and I are in agreement here. I believe the DH made a poor decision to release e-mail addresses. The DH has nothing I want other than an apology and a manner by which they can register and then monitor users for their bad behavior.
We never had this problem with Graham; what is going on here?
Sincerely,
BA
Here's my problem. The Daily Home provided a reasonable belief to privacy in it's past conduct. Even when it attempted to control respondents in the past, the Daily Home led registrars to believe their identity would be held private. The Daily Home took no action to notify responders that they were going to release private email addresses before doing so, thus allowing responders the opportunity to opt out. As a result, the Daily Home has subjected responders to invasion of privacy (unsolicited spam at a minimum).
Daily Home, I ask you once more what you intend to do to correct this problem. Read my above reference. If your attorneys feel up to tangling with the United States Supreme Court, then I'll be happy to accommodate. I prefer not to do so, but I refuse to be ignored on one of my basic freedoms.
I will assume that if you do not address this specific issue in your Daily Home on-line and printed publications by no later than Sunday's edition, that you do not intend to address it at all, at which time I will begin appropriate proceedings to bring this issue to the forefront and follow any and all legal due course available to me. It's your choice Daily Home.
By coincidence, I just spoke to him about 30 minutes ago and asked if he was serious.
His response was, yes, they invaded our privacy but, if a lawsuit was filed everytime some small-town newspaper did something like this, the legal system would be clogged for years.
He said we should simply ask that they stop doing it. He will write a letter if necessary but thinks anything beyond that would waste everyone's time.
Sincerely,
Bosley "Judd for the Defense" Alderman
My attorney is considering a class action suit against the DH for invasion of privacy - if you or anyone else is interested, please contact me at the e-mail address the DH has so nicely posted for the world to see!
