Talladega lost a distinguished legal scholar and former District Court Judge when John Coleman died last week.

Judge Coleman held a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from The University of Alabama. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and after the war he married Mary Dowdell Welch and began practicing law in Talladega. He was elected as a district judge in 1974 and served in that capacity until 1989.

Circuit Court Judge Julian King remembered Judge Coleman as a neighbor who welcomed youngsters into his home. And he recalled that local attorneys improved their skills when practicing before Judge Coleman in non-jury cases.

“I was fortunate enough to have been one of those,” Judge King said.

Former Circuit Court Judge Jerry Fielding was a district judge in the southern end of Talladega County while Judge Coleman served in the northern half.

“He (Judge Coleman) was an outstanding jurist who handled himself in a dignified, appropriate manner. He wanted to see justice rendered,” said Judge Fielding.

We offer our condolences to his family and friends, and we offer our appreciation for the service he provided the people of Talladega County.
