TALLADEGA — City Board of Education members questioned the school system’s hiring practices at the regular meeting Monday.

The board approved the hiring of eight people total by two 3-1 votes. Board member Mary McGhee cast the dissenting votes.

McGhee said the personnel hiring on the agenda included two teachers who did not have certification in Alabama. She said both had, however, applied for certification.

McGhee also said she believed there were applicants who were already certified for the positions.

“We know for a fact people come in constantly asking ‘are they hiring?’” she said. “But then we go through the same process of hiring people who are not certified.”

McGhee also read a letter from board member Shirley Simmons-Sims, who was not present at the meeting. Sims stated in her letter she has requested board members receive all applications for each position to be hired, and “not just the names of the persons being recommended and/or the top candidates.”

McGhee said the board has received information on the top three candidates for open positions.

Board member James Braswell said he wanted to see the “best candidates” hired. He also said the board should listen to the school principals in the hiring process.

“The people they hire, they have to work with them,” Braswell said. “They should have a good bit of say-so in who they want or who they select for the school.”

The board’s vote approved the hiring of Rebecca Boggs and Amy Crowe, special education at Graham Elementary, Catherine Chandler, speech pathologist for the school district, and Jerrell Burns, history teacher and coach at Talladega High School.

Also at the meeting, Superintendent Douglas Campbell announced orientation for new hires would be Aug. 2 and the first day of school would be Aug. 9.

Although you are probably correct concerning the two board members, I am constantly puzzled why Pell City hires people without the correct certification when qualified applicants are vying for the job. I thought when someone is given a provisional certificate, the school board has to report to the state dept. that no qualified applicants were available. The ones hired almost always have some connection with the Board of Ed. Several people are known to have been arrested for drug use but somehow still manage to beat out qualified applicants.

Once again McGee and Simmons-Sims are whining because their candidates of choice weren't hired. As usual, they are trying to change procedures and protocols in order to further their personal agendas. There is a reason the policies are place. It is to protect school system employees and students from unscrupulous and power hungry board members. It is not the responsibility of board members to run the day to day operations of the school system. It is the job of the superintendent. It is my understanding that McGee wanted to cast a vote for Simmons-Sims but was reminded that board members must be present to vote. Perhaps she thought that since she was elected with questionable absentee votes that it was okay to cast one as a board member. Board members are paid to serve, but this is the second consecutive monthly meeting that Simmons-Sims has missed. It would be appropriate for her to refund her pay for the months she failed to show up for work. Thankfully, we have three board members who show up and work tirelessly for the children of Talladega. Keep up the good work and try not to get discouraged. You are appreciated. Congratulations to the new system employees and good luck.
