According to Talladega County Drug and Violent Crime Task Force Commander Jason Murray, the package was mailed from San Diego, Calif., ostensibly from “Grandpa Henderson” and addressed to “Grandma Henderson.”
The package aroused the suspicion of postal inspectors, who notified the task force.
“Our dog alerted on the packages and we waited for someone to come pick them up,” Murray said.
Henry Antonio Curry, Travette Vondez Keith and Arelu (pronounced “Aurelius”) Renard Curry arrived Saturday, with Henry Curry signing for the package using a false name. “He did use the last name Henderson, but he did not sign as Grandma,” Murray said.
After leaving the post office, the three suspects went to Dollar General, where one went in to buy something. After getting back into the car, they were pulled over and arrested before they could go anywhere else.
The total weight of the marijuana was 6.1 pounds, Murray said.
All three defendants had their initial court appearance before District Judge Jeb Fannin. Bond for Henry Curry and Keith was set at $250,000. Arelu Curry’s bond was set at $200,000.
Trafficking in marijuana is a Class A felony in Alabama, punishable upon conviction by 10 to 99 years or life in prison. In addition, marijuana trafficking also carries a mandatory minimum of three calendar years, during which the convict will be eligible for parole, probation or good time credit and a $25,000 fine.
