TALLADEGA COUNTY — A Pell City man who had previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder was sentenced to 25 years in prison Wednesday by Circuit Judge Bo Hollingsworth.

Jason Dewayne Moreland, 38, had previously entered a guilty plea to the attempted murder of two Talladega police officers.

Moreland allegedly robbed a convenience store in Childersburg at gunpoint on the morning of Dec. 5. Later the same day, Talladega police attempted to pull him over as a part of a routine traffic stop on Roosevelt Avenue near the 275 Bypass. He opened fire on the two officers and then fled in the truck. A short chase followed, ending with Moreland crashing through a guardrail and flipping the truck several times before landing roof down in a creek, where it caught fire. Moreland was extracted by Talladega firefighters and paramedics and was eventually transported to University Hospital in Birmingham, where he stayed for about a week before being discharged.

It was not clear Wednesday whether or not the robbery charge, pending before Circuit Judge Julian King, had been disposed of.

Also in court Wednesday, Hollingsworth sentenced Jeremy Petenbrink, 28, to concurrent 15-year terms for 33 counts of breaking into and entering a motor vehicle and 10 counts of burglary. Petenbrink was also given a concurrent 365 day stretch in the Talladega County Jail for one count of attempted burglary. He will also be required to pay restitution to all 25 of his victims, including the city of Talladega.

All of the break-ins occurred in a single night, between late Dec. 28 and early Dec. 29. The burglary charges involved breaking into garages to get to the vehicles inside them.

According to Talladega police reports available after the break-ins, many of the vehicles were left unlocked, but those that weren’t had windows broken out.

Nearly all of the vehicles broken into were in the Ponderosa development, on Brian, Jerry, Thomas, May and Joyce streets and on Robin Circle.

Items stolen included an EMT kit, loose change, global positioning systems, digital cameras and other various loose items.

Petenbrink has four previous felony convictions, dating back to 2004, also for breaking into and entering a motor vehicle.

Petenbrink’s co-defendant, Steve Ross Cardwell, is serving eight years in prison.

Petenbrink asked Hollingsworth for mercy at sentencing, and his lawyer, Lonnie Shaw, asked the court to consider an evaluation of the defendant’s history with drugs, bi-polar disorder, anger issues and lack of job skills.
