PELL CITY — A Pell City teenager died Thursday morning after a Wednesday night vehicle accident.

Cpl. Steve Smith, public information officer for the Alabama State Troopers, said 17-year-old Karly Jean Meeks was pronounced dead shortly after 5 a.m. Thursday.

He said Meeks and a 17-year-old female from Riverside were in a 1999 Dodge Dakota on Deer Trace Road, three miles north of Pell City, when the vehicle began an out-of-control skid and hit a tree on the passenger side at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

“Speed appears to be the primary cause of the crash,” he said.

Smith said Meeks, a passenger in the pickup truck, was transported by LifeSaver helicopter to University Hospital in Birmingham, and the 17-year-old driver was transported to the same hospital by Regional Paramedical Services.

He said neither teenager was wearing a seatbelt.

Smith said the driver was still in the hospital Thursday afternoon, but she had been moved out of intensive care.

Meeks was a student at Pell City High School.

Alabama State Troopers are investigating the accident.

You can die in an accident going 35 just as you could going 75. Age has nothing to do with the rate of speed. It was an accident. Yes, with age comes wisdom and more experience but yet there are older individuals that can't seem to obey the speed limit either. This young girl lost her life and it will eternally be a burden on the drivers heart and mind. This is so tragic! Everyone should lift the driver and Karly's family up in prayer. This is not a time to pass judgement.

I think the age to get a license should be raised to 18 sense 16 and 17 year olds can't operate a vehicle responsibly. This tragic accident could've been avoided had the vehicle been traveling the posted limit of 35.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Karly's family. She was just a ray of sunshine everytime I saw her. She and Mathew were just at our house hours before this. May God bless you all and comfort you during this tragic loss of such a sweet and precious life.

garden23--The wreck occurred at 7:30 pm, not exactly late. She was pronounced dead at 5:00 am because she was removed from life support.

This sweet baby is my niece, my sister's daughter. I posted a picture of her and her sister. On behalf of my sister and family, we thank you all for your comments and prayers.

My heart goes out to the Meeks family. This was not like Karly to not have her seat belt on. She will be greatly missed. Such a tragedy and a young life taken. Pray for the family today.
