RIVERSIDE — Officials are expecting a chili September — with no beans about it.

“The International Chili Society contacted us about hosting a chili cook-off,” Councilman Kenny Womack said. “We think it’s a great idea that could turn into a popular annual event.”

The First Annual International Chili Society Cook-off in Riverside is at 3 p.m. Sept. 25 at Riverside Landing.

“It is a sanctioned chili cook-off,” Womack said. “The winner will go on to compete in the national competition in Las Vegas in October.”

Womack said as of now, the chili cook-off in Riverside is the only sanctioned International Chili Society cook-off in the state.

“We expect to have people from all over, including other states, travel to Riverside to compete,” he said.

Womack said a participant must be a member of the International Chili Society to enter the competition.

“In addition to the International Chili Society cook-off, the city departments will have their own chili competition,” he said.

Womack said the Fire Department, Police Department, Water Department, and Fire Department auxiliary will compete.

“We will have a people’s choice winner for the department competition,” he said.

Womack said the department chili cook-off competition chili will be sold for $1 a bowl, with proceeds benefiting the Fire Department.

“The competition chili will also be for sale after the cook-off is judged,” he said.

Womack said in addition to the chili cook-off, the Fire Department is hosting a charity fishing tournament the same day.

The First Annual Riverside Volunteer Fire Department Charity Fishing Tournament will begin at daylight, with weigh-in at 2 p.m. at Riverside Landing.

“There will be a fee to enter the fishing tournament, and cash prizes for the winners, as well as door prizes,” he said.

Womack said a variety of entertainment is booked for the event.

“We have had quite a bit of positive feedback from the community so far,” he said. “Everyone seems to like the idea and it is something that will hopefully catch on and become a popular yearly event.”
