The B.B. Comer Tigers haven’t beaten the Childersburg Tigers in nine years.

First year head coach Anthony Jacks hopes to change that tonight when Comer hosts Childersburg at Legion Stadium.

“None of these kids have even been around when Comer beat Childersburg,” Jacks said. “We want to beat Childersburg; we want to do that. We feel like if we can do that, we can get some confidence early. These kids are ready to play. I’m excited about it. I think we’ve got a chance.”

Childersburg head coach Matt Brooks said there are a lot of unknowns going into the first game of the season. While most of the players from both schools are familiar with each other, neither team has seen film on the other from their jamborees last week.

“You just want to cover all of your bases and be prepared for everything they can throw at you,” Brooks said.

Comer will feature new players in key positions tonight. Jacks has not named a starting quarterback yet, but said two players will likely see time at the position tonight.

“Joey Treadwell and Dylan McClure are neck and neck,” Jacks said. “Joey’s got a few more reps; Dylan’s more of a raw athlete. I thought they both played pretty well in the spring game.”

Childersburg will also feature a new quarterback and Brooks said more than one player will see time at the position tonight.

“It’s been a fall of quarterback competition,” Brooks said. “Lagaryius Bradley is the guy that’s going to kind of run things for us. Courtney Reynolds will see time at quarterback. Santavious Oden is a kid that’s going to get time there as well. We’ll find out a little bit more about our quarterback (tonight). They’re all new and inexperienced.”

Comer’s defense will be faced with the task of stopping Childersburg running back Fabian Garrett. Garrett was injured a season ago, but is now healthy and looking to go out on top in his senior season.

“I don’t have any film on them,” Jacks said. “We know they’ve got the Garrett kid who is a great player. We know that we’re going to have to stop him to be able to win the game.”

Brooks said limiting mistakes and having good field position could be key in the game tonight.

“You have to make sure you take care of the football,” he said. “Field position, which team can control the field position (will be key).”

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Legion Stadium in Sylacauga.
