The extent of the damage was also not clear.
No one was injured in the fire. Parks and Recreation Department personnel were able to evacuate the building safely, and the construction crew that had been working in the pool area left 10 or 15 minutes before the fire started, said City Manager Brian Muenger.
He said contractors had been working around the skylight area where the fire may have started earlier in the day. He speculated sparks from a grinder or welder might have gotten onto one of the several heavy wooden beams.
Work on the new roof was expected to be complete next week, he said.
The fire comes less than a month after a construction supervisor fell to his death working on the same roof. That death remains under investigation by the U.S. Occupational Safety Hazard Administration.
