Not even, it turned out, the Aggies themselves.
Playing in their first contest of 2010, Sylacauga racked up over 450 yards of offense Friday night, and overcame four turnovers and two long touchdowns called back for penalties in a 41-6 victory over 4A Munford. Sylacauga (1-0) put a stamp on the game in the final period, with 20 fourth-quarter points.
“The final score of this game is very deceptive,” Aggie head coach Matt Griffith said afterward. “This was a tight ballgame for three quarters.”
The Aggie offense rode the broad shoulders of back De’Morris Bledsoe for most of its offense. The senior finished with 27 carries for 215 yards, three touchdowns and an untold number of broken tackles.
“We didn’t tackle well, but (Bledsoe) had a great game,” Munford head coach Will Wagnon said. “Our plan was good, and our execution was good up to the point of making the tackle.”
Bledsoe wrenched himself free of multiple defenders on the Aggies’ second possession of the game, turning a fourth-and-short into a 33-yard score for an early 6-0 lead.
Munford (0-1) wouldn’t go away quietly — after an Aggie fumble ended a drive at the Lions’ 26-yard line, Munford quickly tied the score. Senior Johnathon Parker dashed 41 yards to paydirt early in the second quarter to knot things at 6.
Parker led Munford’s offense with 12 carries for 81 yards and the score. Fellow senior Bradley Heard netted 47 yards on 11 carries, while quarterback Deonta Allen gained 41 yards on 9 carries. As a team, the Lions finished with 217 total yards.
“Give a lot of credit to Munford,” Griffith said. “They’re a good team and they’re going to beat some people.”
After another drive ended with another fumble, an interception by Sylacauga’s Jeremy Murphy set the Aggies up at the Lions’ 33. Only three plays later, senior quarterback Matt Collier found Brantley Carr in the back corner of the end zone; Bledsoe ran in the two-point conversion, and the Aggies led 14-6.
The score remained 14-6 through the first half and much of the third quarter. Munford moved the ball into Aggie territory twice, but couldn’t cash in, while Sylacauga fumbled once more and had a Bledsoe touchdown called back due to an illegal block.
“We made so many mistakes,” Griffith said. “We should’ve put the game away a lot earlier than we did.”
Bledsoe finally put some distance between the visitors and the home side with his second touchdown, an 11-yard score that capped a 72-yard drive. Two more Lion drives into Sylacauga territory fell short, before a 74-yard Sylacauga drive ended with an 11-yard touchdown run by Collier.
Collier finished with 15 carries for 43 yards and a touchdown, and added seven completions for 107 yards and a score.
Bledsoe and sophomore quarterback Aaron Hatton closed out the scoring.
Both teams will jump into region play next week — Munford will host Holtville at Holcombe Field.
“We’ve still got our goal of making the playoffs,” Wagnon said. “There aren’t any gimmes in this region – we play Holtville next week and that’s the most important game of our season.
“We’re going to build on what we did well and learn from our mistakes and get better. We’re not quitting.”
Sylacauga will open its home schedule on Friday, taking on Chelsea to open region play.
“You have to remember, we replaced nine starters from last year,” Griffith said. “The nine starters were all three-year starters.
“We’re going to have to get a lot better before we beat anybody else.”
