SYLACAUGA — The Police Department is investigating an apparent murder and attempted suicide that occurred Tuesday outside Blue Bell Creameries.

According to a department release, responders found Shalanda Elaine Pope, 38, of Sylacauga dead at the scene after dispatchers received a call of shots fired around 4:20 a.m. Police officers discovered Pope inside a vehicle in the rear parking lot of Blue Bell near West Fourth Street and North Anniston Avenue.

Investigators said it appeared she had died from a single gunshot wound.

Michael Cornelius Milliner, 35, of Sylacauga was also found shot inside the same vehicle. Emergency services airlifted Milliner to University Hospitals in Birmingham.

Milliner underwent surgery Tuesday morning and was alive as of 4 p.m., according to a police investigator.

The release stated the shooting appeared to be domestic related. Pope and Milliner were previously married, according to initial information.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, Talladega County Coroners Office and the Talladega County District Attorney’s Office are assisting Sylacauga police in the investigation.

Pope had been employed at Blue Bell for nine years. A release from the company stated she would be greatly missed by everyone who knew her, and expressed sorrow and regret for her loss on behalf of the company’s staff.

The statement said, “Shalanda was very passionate about her family and her work. She supported our local community as well as her fellow employees. She was one of the most experienced operators in our facility and always instilled her passion for quality into her work, and happily shared it with her co-workers. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

“We would like to especially express our sympathy to Shalanda’s family, as well as all affected by this loss,” it stated. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Police asked anyone with information concerning the case to call the department’s investigations division at 256-401-2464 or report anonymously to the automated tip line at 256-249-4716.

Shalanda, or as we called her Lama, was known and loved by so many people. To say she was a great friend, mother, coworker and citizen would be a understatement. I had the pleasure of working with her for 9 years. She always made me laugh and would lend a ear when I needed it. She was a blessing to so many of us. Working at Bluebell is alot different than most places. We are a family. We reach out to one another in our times of need. We watch each others children grow up. We ARE family. Lama will never be forgotten and everyday is a battle for us to even dare walk by the spot where she passed. Noone can even begin to imagine how it felt to be hit with that going into work on what should have been a normal day. Someone asked if she had children and the answer is yes and a grandchild as well. For those of you that seem to put her as another statistic well let me tell you with all the respect I can. Lama was a human being. The hell her ex husband put her through is something that most of you couldnt even begin to imagine. I know we are suppose to forgive and pray for everyone. But My heart wont let me pray for this man. Lama had no choice in what happened to her. BUT HE DID. Lets not forget that married or not, domestic abuse or not, HE KILLED HER! He took her away from us and her family and that is unforgivable

I am soo very sorry this happened and I offer my deepest sympathies to this woman's family and friends. I did not know her at all but I have family who did and they say she was the most kindest, happiest, positive person they had ever met. Said she never had a frown on her face. Hope the family can someday find a way to turn this very awful negative into something positive - in honor of the wonderful person she seemed to be. God Bless you all.

I would just like to send out my condolences to the family and friends of Shalanda. The article didn't mention any children. My heart goes out to them if there are. I just hope that all involved find peace.

I was uplifted by the turnout of the community at the candlelight vigil held in the Blue Bell parking lot last night. It was a very impressed to see all the family and friends and school mates that came out to console and support the family in their time of loss.

This is not the time to try and politicize what ever social agenda. The reality is a woman has died and we need to support the family. Throughout humanity there has been loss of life. We can't control it. We can't say who or what is to blame or why he did what he did. The Savior will sort that out in the next life. We need to take this opportunity to take stock of our lives and help this family in their time of need.

wait wait wait.. are you saying it is the medias fault and trying to end child abuse is to blame? This is still a capital punishement state. children are still as the paper that was sent home to me to sign.. receive 3 licks.. which shows the ignorance of our school systems which is shapeing our children.. Men killing their wifes and children have been going on for 100's of years.. growing up in the 80's women and children were still being beating and abused behind closed doors with the neighbors turning their heads.. THANK GOD the media did get involved.. The media has brought to light many child molesters that people lived next to and used as babysitters,, Do i think the media goes over board sometimes. YES ... however the media did not make this man do as he did nor did spareing the rod.. you are a product of your inveriment not the media.. Over population, under paid , dead beat parents and of course just being born to be bad is the main problem. I know many good people with bad kids and it stems more from school peer pressure.. my sympathy is for the family and friends of this great woman and you belittle and disrespected her greatly by making the comments you did.. that the media and trying to end child abuse is to blame..
