The Lincoln Golden Bears look to put a mark in the win column on Friday when they host the Elmore County Panthers in the region opener.

The Bears (0-1) enter the region opener looking to bounce back from an overtime loss to Etowah last week.

“It was great for the fans and people watching the game,” Lincoln head coach Chad Martin said of the season opener. “We just made some mistakes at crucial times during the game and I think that ended up costing us a victory there. We didn’t make the plays there at the end.”

Martin said the Golden Bears have had a “pretty good week of practice” and they hope to have fixed the mistakes from last week’s game. Lincoln will host an Elmore County team that is coming off of a big win over Alabama Christian.

The Panthers came out strong in the first quarter and were able to build an early lead on the Eagles. The Golden Bears defense will try to stop Elmore County’s running backs Dakota Freeman and Shukory Whetstone, who ran wild against Alabama Christian last week.

Freeman had over 100 yards in the first half. The duo rushed for nearly 300 yards in the game.

“We’re going to have to play well defensively,” Martin said. “We’re going to have to take away their tailbacks who do a good job of running the football.

“Offensively, we’re going to have to sustain drives.”

Lincoln back Rakeem Truss and quarterback Sharrod Cochran both scored touchdowns in the opener last week.
