LINCOLN – The Lincoln Lady Golden Bears will host their inaugural “Dig Pink” Tournament on Saturday.

There are 15 teams participating in the tournament that from 8:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m.

“We are designating that as our community service project for our volleyball teams at Lincoln High School,” Lincoln head coach Patty Hansen said. ”We are going to have booths set up and any money we raise that day is going to be donated to the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation. This is what we are looking forward to doing.

“We have several teams dressed in pink uniforms, pink ribbons and we are going to try to deck (the gym) out in all pink. We are looking to get some community members involved if they want to come visit, watch volleyball and make donations.”

Fans will not only have a chance to watch volleyball all day, but there will be activities and booths set up inside the school dealing with breast cancer awareness.

“We will have a jail set up,” Hansen said. “Our resource officer here is going to arrest fans, teachers, students, and coaches and put them in jail. You will have to pay to get them out. We are going to have our “Dig Pink Jail” for that day. We will have face painting, and many more fun activities.”

This event was originally supposed to kick off last year, but the death of coach Keith Howard changed the Lady Golden Bears’ plans.

“We planned on doing it last year, but with the unexpected death of coach Howard, we geared our ideas and what we were trying to do for coach Howard’s family,” Hansen said. “At that time we did that for him and his family.

“I just feel like my girls need to do community service projects and that is one of them. I think they need to learn that there are other people that we have to help and you can’t always expect to receive things. They need to do everything they can to help others to better themselves.”

Hansen believes the girls are ecstatic about their “Dig Pink” tournament this weekend.

“We have girls making ribbons; we have girls buying head bands and making posters with names and things on it,” Hansen said. “I think they are excited about it and ready to play with all the teams that are going to be there, so that will be a good thing also.”

The Lady Golden Bears are bringing in people to inform everybody in attendance about one of the most common cancers in American women.

“Breast cancer is mostly a woman’s illness,” Hansen said. “It gives them a chance to learn some things about it. We are supposed to have somebody here with a booth set up with those kinds of health issues and brochures for them.”

Hansen and the Lady Golden Bears are asking for volunteers to help out with the tournament.

“If their is anybody in the community interested in a booth set up or just want to take apart in it and help us out, call the school and ask for me,” Hansen said. “That will help us out and it would be great.”
