Things always seem more solid when they have a name, and although the new veterans’ home in Pell City is still in the planning stages, it became somewhat more substantial this week when the state Department of Veterans Affairs announced that it had decided upon a name.

The facility will be called the Col. Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home, in honor of a Medal of Honor winner from Opelika. It’s a good choice, pleasing to Alabamians to have it named for one of our own.

The plans will feel even more real when construction starts, and the ceremonial beginning also has a date: Groundbreaking for the new veterans home has been scheduled for Nov. 30.

Anticipation is turning to excitement, and excitement will build as the site is excavated, the foundation poured and the walls go up. All this gets going in less than two months, and we look forward to a ribbon-cutting in the spring of 2012.
